FWM: One of your passions is helping those around you overcome their self-limiting beliefs. Share your background.

One lesson that changed my career was understanding the power of our mindset. While I was working hard, my self-limiting beliefs were sabotaging my success. It wasn’t until I started studying with the John Maxwell Team, the Empowered Living Community and the Chopra Center that I saw the flaws in my thinking. I needed to change my thinking, confront my own beliefs about success, and face my fears, in order to turn around my career. After seeing my transformation, I shared the tools that I learned with others. I became a certified speaker/coach with the John Maxwell Team, as well as a meditation instructor with the Chopra Center.

FWM: You are a best-selling author who has written both non-fiction and fiction books, ranging from Urban Fantasy to Children’s Books. Where do you draw inspiration from? How do you switch gears from non-fiction to fiction?

I’m very blessed that inspiration comes to me from everywhere. Conversations with friends have inspired the creation of some of my fantasy books. My nephews inspired my children’s books. I wanted to give them a book that could help them find their talents while they are still young.

A Facebook Live series I hosted inspired my devotionals. I concentrated the series on giving viewers inspirational content to help them follow their dreams. The devotionals extended that and the books asked the readers to Dare to love, forgive, and believe.

Switching between fiction and non-fiction takes me some concentration. My non-fiction books have a lot more personal experience to motivate the readers. My fiction books are very entertaining and fast-paced. I have a lot more freedom in creating those books, and bringing those characters to life.

FWM: Tell us about the Death’s Intern, the debut novel by Intern Diaries Series which is part of USA Today bestselling authors.

Death’s Intern is a humorous urban fantasy adventure based on the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. The story takes place in the small town of Texarkana (in East Texas), where Isis works. Her life is mundane at best. Nothing exciting happens in town until Death knocks on Isis’s door with a job offer. The idea is outrageous to Isis. She would be the Intern for North America, responsible for making sure nothing stops Death’s job to deliver the souls of the dead to their last destination. Death’s right hand “man” Constantine, a 5000-year-old talking cat, is to be Isis’ guardian and trainer. Nothing of the situation is appealing to Isis until they kidnapped her only friend, Bob. Now Isis has to make a choice, help her friend and take the job or let him perish. She takes the leap for his sake, and the adventures begins.

FWM: Why is Death’s Intern resonating with audiences?

Death’s Intern is the journey of Isis Black as she navigates her new world as the North American Intern for Death. The book starts with a normal girl, Army-Vet, and who knows nothing about the supernatural world. I introduced the reader to the supernatural world through the eyes of Isis. Her reactions to wild situations, and the way she deals with things, are reactions many of us can connect with. She doesn’t start with power, but a struggling musician that works as a server. Isis is caring, hardworking and curious. As a reader, we all cheer for a protagonist that has similar values to us and wants to do the right thing.

FWM: Who will enjoy this book?

Any reader that enjoys quirky characters, action, fantasy, and fast-paced adventure, would love this book. Also, readers of Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files and Kim Harrison’s The Hallows series would find Death’s Intern engaging and fun. This is a great summer read to help you escape from your everyday affairs and get lost in Isis’ world.

FWM: You are also a Certified John Maxwell Team speaker and coach. Why are people coming to you today?

For my clients, I served multiple functions. I’m a motivator, cheerleader, but also an accountability partner. Many of us worked well when deadlines are in place. Having a person who is holding you accountable for results is a great motivation to keep you moving forth. Over the years and working with many clients, I have learned the importance of celebrating every success (regardless of how small they are) while dissecting failures for new lessons.

FWM: What is next?

I’m back to writing fantasy and working on my next novel. I have a spin-off series from the Intern Diaries called The Order’s Assassin. One of our side characters, Eric, is getting his own series. He has left Texarkana and heading off to the East Coast to help the Order of Witches tracked down the traitors within their organization. Book 1 (The Hitman) is a short novella that is available now. Book 2 (the Traitor) is the first novel in the series and is following Eric in his search for answers.
