FWM POWER 20: Jordan Campbell

Formidable Woman Magazine’s “POWER 20” Online Magazine spotlights 20 accomplished women making extraordinary strides in their industries. These women inspire the next woman to be bold, to unapologetic, to be great!

FWM’s Power 20 Cover Girl Jordan Campbell

I recently joined a women’s travel group that also has a creator’s network, and it’s been one of the most rewarding groups I’ve ever engaged in.

FWM: Who is Jordan and what is your superpower?
To be honest, Jordan is just your everyday, awkward girl working hard to make her mark in the world. I’ve always been someone who did their own thing and wasn’t scared to stray from the pack. I’ve also always been outspoken and sarcastic. Fortunately, these traits are well-rewarded in the art world, if nowhere else. I’ve owned who I am and have found success in my own way. (Literally in ways people thought I could never even be successful. No “starving artist” trope here.) Now, I try to support other women in their endeavors as well. #EmpoweredWomenEmpowerWomen

My superpower is persistence. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. And, when I want something, I don’t give up. Even when I feel like… maybe I should give up. Or even that it’s in my best interests to give up. Those periods of time usually only last for a day or so, though, and then I get sick of my own pity party and jump back on the horse. If I gave up, I wouldn’t have become a designer at all, let alone a creative director, and owner of my own business with a master’s degree. Because I can assure you that none of those were easily earned.

FWM: How can women who want to do what you do gain access and support?
These days—when you consider Web design, front-end coding, the gaming industry, animation—the design community is very tech-heavy. Which also usually means it’s fairly male-dominated. My technical undergrad university had a ratio of nine men for every one woman, for example. And that was twenty years ago! So, on one hand, you have to hold your own and be confident in what you can deliver. On another hand, you can reach out directly to me for support, because I’ve been there. (See websites and social media channels listed.)

But you can also find other like-minded women in various communities online. I recently joined a women’s travel group that also has a creator’s network, and it’s been one of the most rewarding groups I’ve ever engaged in. Not only have I learned so, so much about my craft, I’ve met other women I truly admire. (You can also reach out to me for more information on this, if interested!) You have to be persistent in these efforts as well, though, because not all of the communities I’ve joined have been a great fit; you have to find the ones that work for you.

FWM: You’re a serious BOSS! Tell us, what are you working on and what’s next for you?I’ve just wrapped up a number of blog and social media posts for content creation on the travel front. I did a
ton of collaborations with other travel writers as well. And I’m currently designing a virtual learning environment for a nonprofit organization. Which is pretty cool, because not only is it forward-thinking, it’s for a nonprofit, which means its mission is something bigger than me or you.

I’m also contracted with a number of other nonprofit organizations and will eventually be working on another website redesign and some international presentations. While I’m doing this, I’m hunting down my next big travel opportunity in the face of Coronavirus, and hope to do some more content creation on that front as well.
