Nigerian-American born Singer and Songwriter, Janeliasoul

FWM: Share your background.

I am a Nigerian-American born to a Nigerian mother and an American father. I was born in Houston, Texas where my parents met. They took me to Nigeria when I was 2 years old which is where I developed the love for music.

FWM: When did you discover your love for music and performing?

I discovered my love for music and performing as a child growing up in a town called Ibadan in Oyo State Nigeria where I learned traditional Yoruba folk songs. Growing up, there was music everywhere, on the streets, in schools, at churches and festivals where there was always a big musical performance.

FWM: What are Yoruba Folk Songs and how do they relate to your new album?

Yoruba folk songs are songs that originated from the Yoruba people and tradition. We call them “Orin Ibile” which translates to “traditional songs”. Other than these songs being rhythmic and melodic. The lyrical content is usually inspiring or passes on a message or affirmations. My new album and my music in general is an extension of these traditional songs that I was imparted with at a very early age.

FWM: Your video, “Love-Hate” has garnered more than 1 million views on YouTube. What do you think is resonating with people? Can you share your inspiration and vision for the video?

Love-Hate is one of those songs that made me reach deep down in my heart to write. It is probably the most honest song that I have ever written. There was no holding back and there was no fluff. Just the honest truth about being in a love-hate relationship and that is why I think it resonates with so many people. Also, having a video that was well executed also helped propel it.

FWM:  Who inspires you?

Sade is one of my inspirations. The first album I purchased was a Sade album and I immersed myself in her music after that.

FWM: What would people be surprised to know about you?

People might be surprised to know that I am also the CEO of an online boutique for women and I work with a small team to process orders every day.

FWM: You are known for your affirmative, uplifting, and power lyrics. Tell us about your single, “I am Bold.”

“I Am Bold” was not always a song. It is actually one of my most used affirmations which I later composed as a song. In the past, when a situation seems hopeless, I find myself being too timid or afraid to confront it. This song serves as a reminder that I am bold and strong enough to approach any situation. I also wanted to share this message with others and that was what inspired me to make this affirmation into a song.

FWM: How are you empowering women? Why are you a Formidable Woman?

I am empowering women with my music and also with my guided affirmation posts on Instagram. Sad as it may, many of us have things that we struggle with on either a physical, emotional or mental level. I have a strong conviction that I should share the tools and strategies that help me with my fans and my music is the medium that I use. Therefore, I am adding a new affirmation to my list i.e. I AM a Formidable Woman”

FWM: What is next for you in 2020?

With the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, I felt hopeless and discouraged and did not know how to press forward with achieving both my short term and long term goals. Then I remembered my mission as an Artist to inspire and empower; so I chose not to let these challenging times get me down but rather live up to my mighty mission with another inspiring song which is so needed at this time. I’m currently in the studio recording and what’s next is to finish the song, shoot a music video for it and share it with the world.
